Why is it a geographic issue?
A geographic issue is an issue that affects people and the environment. Ayers rock (Uluru) is a much loved landmark of Australia. Tourists come from around the world to see the amazing sight of this 348 meter high rock. But there is a lot of conflict about this rock. Tourists have been disrespecting the rock and the the community and the Aborigines surrounding the rock wants to ban being able to climb it. But the state government and the national government want the climb open because tourist bring a lot of money into the country. Tourists have been using the rock as a lavatory and they have been leaving their rubbish there to. The rock is sacred to the aborigine tribe that lives just below it. The advice that had been given to tourist for years it that they should not climb it because of how special it is to this tribe but many still do. The national park has released a proposal that the climb be banned for safety and cultural and environmental reasons. In January 2010 it was announced that Uluru would stay open to those who climb short term.
